Revealed Preference Tests of the Cournot Model
We consider an observer who makes a finite number of observations of an industry producing a homogeneous good, where each observation consists of the market price and firm-specific production quantities. We develop a revealed preference test (in the form of a linear program) for the hypothesis that the firms are playing a Cournot game, assuming that they have convex cost functions that do not c...
متن کاملSlutsky matrix norms: The size, classification, and comparative statics of bounded rationality
Given any observed demand behavior by means of a demand function, we quantify by how much it departs from rationality. The measure of the gap is the smallest Frobenius norm of the correcting matrix function that would yield a Slutsky matrix with its standard rationality properties (symmetry, singularity, and negative semidefiniteness). A useful classification of departures from rationality is s...
متن کاملGoodness-of-Fit for Revealed Preference Tests
I describe a goodness-of-fit measure for revealed preference tests. This index can be used to measure the degree to which an economic agent violates the model of utility maximization. I calculate the violation indices for a 38 consumers and find that the observed choice behavior is very close to optimizing behavior.

متن کاملPower Indices for Revealed Preference Tests
Revealed preference tests are elegant nonparametric tools that ask whether individual or aggregate data conform to economic models of optimizing behavior. In designing a test using revealed preference, however, one faces a vexing tension between goodness-of- t and power. If the test nds violations, then one must ask if the test was too demanding is there an acceptable tolerance for goodness-o...
